The mission of the Lost Civilizations Database is to identify, document, compare, and preserve the world’s most significant evidence of lost civilizations and forgotten chapters of human history.
The LCD is a growing global record built through the contributions of researchers, explorers, specialists, photographers, travelers, and local communities around the world.
By examining monumental architecture, precision stonework, submerged ruins, unusual construction methods, evidence of multiple building phases, and unresolved questions of chronology, the LCD encourages responsible investigation, comparative research, and open discussion.
The LCD evaluates sites through the overall combination of their architectural, technological, chronological, and contextual evidence. No single characteristic alone is sufficient for inclusion.
Sites considered for the LCD may exhibit a meaningful combination of the following characteristics:
*Inclusion in the LCD does not mean that a site has been conclusively identified as belonging to a lost civilization. Rather, it indicates that the site contains physical evidence worthy of careful documentation, preservation, comparison, and further investigation.

Easter Island — Ahu Vinapu and the Moai
On one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world, Ahu Vinapu preserves some of the finest fitted masonry on Rapa Nui. Its shaped blocks, tight joints, and slightly sloping wall faces distinguish it from many of the island’s more conventional ceremonial platforms and have often been compared with masonry traditions in the Andes, more than 2,000 miles away.
Rapa Nui is also home to nearly one thousand known moai. Many remain partially buried in accumulated soil and quarry debris, concealing complete carved bodies beneath their visible heads. Together, Ahu Vinapu, the moai, and other megalithic walls on the island may represent a forgotten building chapter that long predated the Rapa Nui people themselves.
LCD Significance: Precision masonry, monumental sculpture, partially buried monuments, an isolated cultural setting, and debated trans-Pacific architectural parallels with Peru.

Peru — Ollantaytambo
Rising above the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo contains enormous worked stones, finely fitted walls, megalithic terraces, and the unfinished Temple of the Sun. Several immense rose-colored blocks were transported from quarries across the valley and raised high above the settlement.
The monumental foundations display a degree of size, precision, and complexity that contrasts with smaller masonry built around and above them. Unfinished blocks, abandoned transport stones, and unusual joining features also preserve important evidence of the construction process.
LCD Significance: Colossal blocks, precision fitting, long-distance transportation, interlocking features, unfinished construction, and contrasting building phases.

Peru — Cusco and the Coricancha
Cusco preserves several distinct masonry traditions within the heart of the former Inca capital. The Coricancha, traditionally identified as the Temple of the Sun, contains finely cut rectangular stonework with smooth faces, subtle inward inclinations, and exceptionally tight joints.
Elsewhere in the city, polygonal walls incorporate blocks with numerous fitted angles, including the famous twelve-angled stone. Smaller and less precise construction frequently rests upon or has been integrated into these superior foundations.
LCD Significance: Precision rectangular and polygonal masonry, hard-stone construction, earthquake resistance, architectural reuse, and visible construction discontinuities.

Peru — Sacsayhuamán
Overlooking Cusco, Sacsayhuamán is defined by three immense zigzagging terrace walls constructed from tightly fitted polygonal blocks. Some stones weigh hundreds of tons and contain numerous corners, recesses, and irregular surfaces shaped to interlock with the surrounding masonry.
The walls follow the natural terrain while creating a monumental serpentine pattern. Their scale, complex geometry, close fitting, and resistance to earthquakes make Sacsayhuamán one of the world’s most important megalithic sites.
LCD Significance: Colossal polygonal masonry, mortarless joints, interlocking geometry, seismic resilience, and monumental landscape design.

Peru — Machu Picchu
Set dramatically between steep mountain peaks, Machu Picchu contains several clearly distinguishable grades of construction. Its finest ceremonial structures include precisely fitted walls, shaped bedrock, carefully designed entrances, trapezoidal openings, and large stones integrated directly into the mountain.
Rougher walls and later repairs frequently adjoin or rest upon more refined masonry, suggesting a complex architectural history that may include more than one construction tradition.
The site’s water systems, terraces, astronomical relationships, and union of natural rock with architecture make it one of the most significant ancient complexes in the Americas.

Peru — Ñaupa Iglesia
Hidden within the mountains near Ollantaytambo, Ñaupa Iglesia is a small but highly unusual rock-cut site. Its principal feature is a precisely carved monolithic façade containing a false doorway, stepped recesses, geometric surfaces, and carefully formed internal angles.
The design appears symbolic rather than functional and may be unfinished. Its recessed forms and stepped geometry resemble doorway, mountain, and cosmographic motifs found elsewhere throughout the Andes and the wider ancient world.

Bolivia — Puma Punku
On the high plains near Lake Titicaca, Puma Punku preserves some of the most geometrically complex stonework in the ancient Americas. The complex contains finely cut andesite blocks, massive sandstone platforms, recessed surfaces, channels, right angles, drilled features, and repeated architectural forms.
Its best-known stones are the so-called H-blocks, which share standardized shapes and intricate internal cuts. Their controlled geometry and stonework continue to raise questions about the planning, tools, and construction sequence used by the builders.
LCD Significance: Precision andesite cutting, modular stone forms, complex geometry, drilled and recessed features, colossal platforms, and unresolved construction questions.

Bolivia — Tiwanaku
Near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, Tiwanaku developed into one of the most important ceremonial centers of the ancient Andes. The site contains monumental platforms, sunken courts, monolithic statues, and precisely carved monuments, including the Gateway of the Sun, the Ponce Monolith, the Bennett Monolith, and the Kalasasaya complex.
Its varied stone types and construction methods suggest a long and complex developmental history. Monumental iconography, astronomical relationships, and its connection with Puma Punku make Tiwanaku central to understanding the ancient Lake Titicaca region.

Bolivia — Chullpa of Santiago de Ojje
Standing prominently on the Lake Titicaca peninsula near Santiago de Ojje, this large circular funerary tower, or chullpa, was constructed from carefully shaped stone blocks. Its cylindrical form and fitted masonry distinguish it from many simpler burial towers in the region.
The structure belongs to a broader highland tradition of monumental ancestral architecture, but its precise construction and relatively isolated setting warrant further documentation and comparison.

Ecuador — Ingapirca
Set high within the Ecuadorian Andes, Ingapirca is the largest known Inca archaeological complex in the country. Its most refined structure, commonly called the Temple of the Sun, contains carefully cut and tightly fitted blocks arranged in both curved and rectangular forms.
The finest masonry differs from rougher construction elsewhere in the complex and may reflect multiple architectural traditions, including earlier Cañari occupation followed by Inca expansion and modification.

Mexico — The Olmec
The colossal basalt heads of Veracruz and Tabasco are among the most recognizable monuments of ancient Mesoamerica. Some stand several meters high and weigh many tons, with their stone transported considerable distances from volcanic sources before being carved into individualized human faces.
The heads belong to a broader artistic tradition that includes monumental thrones, altars, jade objects, stelae, and figures displaying a distinctive symbolic language. Their scale, transportation, craftsmanship, and cultural influence make them essential to the study of early Mesoamerican civilization.

Mexico — Monolith of Tlaloc
Standing outside Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, the Monolith of Tlaloc is one of the largest surviving monolithic sculptures in the Americas. Traditionally identified with the rain deity Tlaloc, although its original identity remains debated, the carved stone weighs nearly 200 tons.
Its immense scale demonstrates the ability of ancient builders to quarry, shape, transport, and position an enormous stone within a sophisticated ceremonial tradition.

Mexico — Mitla
Mitla is one of the most architecturally refined ceremonial centers in ancient Oaxaca, known for its massive columns, polished stone surfaces, and elaborate geometric mosaics assembled from thousands of individually cut pieces.
The site may also preserve evidence of an earlier and more technically sophisticated construction phase within its foundations, lower walls, and monumental stone elements. This precision work appears distinct from less refined building elsewhere at Mitla, raising questions about the site’s architectural development and the origins of its advanced stoneworking traditions.
Mitla also contains prominent stepped and T-shaped designs that resemble symbols found at other ancient sites around the world.

Spain — Menorca
Across the island of Menorca stand the largest monumental T-shaped stone constructions known from the ancient world. Called taulas, each was formed from a massive upright stone supporting a broad horizontal slab.
The taulas stand within ceremonial enclosures associated with the Talayotic culture. Their exact ritual purpose remains uncertain, but their scale, balance, orientation, and repeated form make them among the most distinctive megalithic monuments in the Mediterranean.
